About John

I was born in 1963 in the city of Aberdeen where my father was a lecturer in physical education before becoming a Minister in the Church of Scotland.

I was educated at the local state school where I developed a great interest in sport as well as an initial involvement in politics, as my father was a local councillor.

From there, I went on to Dundee University where I graduated with an honours degree in history and politics.  From Dundee, I attended the Chester College of Law, completing my legal training with Dickinson Dees at Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1990.

I spent 18 months travelling around the world and working as a barman, waiter and pizza deliverer (anything to allow my travels to continue) in Australia.

On my return I came to Carlisle and joined the local firm of Bendles Solicitors, one of the oldest legal firms in the area.

I soon became a partner in Bendles and became very much a part of the local community.

I lived in Denton Holme for ten years before moving to Great Corby.

John's experience

Politically, I have been chairman of both Carlisle Conservative Association and the Penrith & the Border Association.  I have represented the Stanwix Urban Ward on Carlisle City Council since 1999 and am also Chairman of the North Cumbria Conservative Federation.

Away from politics I have always taken a keen interest in sport both as a participant as well as a spectator, I am still a member of Chatsworth Tennis Club. My main sports are golf and running and I continue to run half marathons, having successfully completed the London (raising money for meningitis research) and New York Marathons. I hope to participate in the Great Cumbrian Run this year.

Conservatives working for Carlisle

Locally the Conservatives have run Carlisle City Council since 1999, during which time they have maintained local services whilst ensuring the council tax has not increased excessively.

I have also been involved in local campaigns, particularly saving our post offices from closure. This included collecting a petition with 4,500 signatures.

On the national scene I have been campaigning hard to ensure the election of a future Conservative government. Carlisle is a key marginal seat and therefore has been well supported with high profile visits from leading members of the Conservative Party, including David Cameron and William Hague.
