Give armed forces free entry

to leisure facilities, says John

November 6, 2009

THE MAN hoping to be Carlisle’s next MP has called on the city’s leisure bosses to offer free tickets to members of the armed services.

John Stevenson, Carlisle’s Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate, says it would be a way of the city showing its appreciation of the work being done by British forces in such places as Iraq and Afghanistan.

“These people are putting their lives on the line every day when they are on active service,” he says. “The least we can do is let them use our leisure facilities free when they come home on leave.”

John, who has just finished a five-year spell on the board of Carlisle Leisure Ltd, which runs leisure and sports centres in the city, says that organisation should allow members of the armed services and their families free entry to its facilities.

He intends to raised the idea with Ray Bloxham, the Tories’ portfolio holder for leisure facilities at Carlisle City Council.

The scheme would allow members of the armed services and their families free access to such places as the Sands Centre, The Pools Swimming and Health Centre and Stony Holme Golf Course.

John says that other local organisations – including shops, cinemas and private sports clubs – might then follow Carlisle Leisure’s example by offering discounts.

Already local authorities in a few other areas already have similar schemes in place.

Members of the armed services and their families are allowed free entry to pools, gyms and sports courts in Bradford.

In Kettering they get half-price entry to council-run leisure centres and museums, and also to some local cinemas and rugby matches.

And in Widnes and Runcorn they can use a council Leisure Card to get reduced admission to selected sports facilities and cinemas.
